Moisture and gentle oven heat can temporarily improve a stale crusty loaf. This is a texture fix—not a way to make spoiled bread safe.

Check the loaf first
Use only plain bread that is stale but still wholesome. If you see mold, discard the loaf; do not cut away a spot or try to kill it by baking. Filled breads and breads with perishable toppings need their own storage and reheating guidance.
Refresh and serve
- Heat the oven to 300–325°F.
- Lightly wet the crust of a small whole or partial crusty loaf with clean drinking water. Avoid soaking the cut face or saturating the crumb.
- Place on an oven-safe tray and heat until the interior is warm and the crust is crisp, checking after about 6 minutes. A larger or wetter loaf may need longer than 12 minutes.
- Let stand briefly and eat promptly; the improvement is temporary.
Prevent waste next time
Slice and freeze sound bread while it is still fresh, then thaw or toast only what you need. Very dry but unspoiled bread may be better used for crumbs or croutons than repeatedly refreshed.
