I really love this Great Northern Beans and Ham Soup recipe from Hurst Beans. It’s so easy to make and just perfect for leftover holiday ham.
Ingredients
- 1-2 cups of ham or turkey cubed or in small pieces
- 1 medium white onion diced
- 1 Tablespoon Better Than Bouillon Sautéd Onion Base
- 5 cups water
- 1 20-ounce package Hurst Great Northern HamBeens®
- 1 packet Goya Ham Flavored Concentrate – Sabor A Jambón de Cocinar Seasoning
- salt and pepper
Procedure
- Rinse beans and drain. Sort any unwanted debris and set seasoning packet aside.
- Place beans in a large pot of cool water. Cover and allow to soak at least 8 hours or overnight. After soaking, drain water.
- Add ham, onion bouillon base and water to the Instant Pot, then secure the lid, making sure the vent is closed.
- Using the display panel select the MANUAL or PRESSURE COOK function. Use the +/- keys and program the Instant pot for 7 minutes.
- When the time is up, let the pressure naturally release for 10 minutes, then quick release the remaining pressure.
- Remove ham and onion from the Instant Pot reserving the cooking liquid.
- Add soaked beans to the Instant Pot, add additional water to cover beans, then secure the lid, making sure the vent is closed.
- Using the display panel select the MANUAL or PRESSURE COOK function. Use the +/- keys and program the Instant pot for 50 minutes.
- When the time is up, let the pressure naturally release for 20 minutes, then quick release the remaining pressure.
- Stir in ham, onions and Goya seasoning. Simmer uncovered for an additional 30 minutes or until thickened.
- Stir in the seasoning packet from the beans and season with salt & pepper to taste. Simmer 1 minute more.
