Moroccan Mint Tea is a fragrant and refreshing blend of bold black tea, fresh mint leaves, and sugar. Known as “Maghrebi mint tea,” this traditional North African beverage is both soothing and invigorating. The mint is gently crushed with sugar to release its essential oils, creating a bright herbal aroma that balances beautifully with the strength of black tea. Served hot, it is a symbol of hospitality and is often enjoyed throughout the day.

Ingredients

  • 8 ounces water
  • 2 tablespoons fresh mint leaves (about 16 medium leaves)
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons granulated sugar (to taste)
  • 1 black tea bag or 1 serving loose black tea

Preparation

  1. Heat at least 10 ounces of water to near boiling.
  2. While the water heats, place the fresh mint leaves and sugar into an 8-ounce mug. Using the back of a spoon, gently crush the mint and sugar together to release the mint’s oils and aroma.
  3. Add the black tea bag or loose tea to the mug.
  4. Pour 8 ounces of the hot water over the mixture and stir gently to combine.
  5. Allow the tea to steep for 3 to 5 minutes.
  6. Strain if using loose tea and mint leaves, then serve hot.

Serving Note

For a more traditional presentation, pour the tea from a slight height into a glass to create a light foam on top. Adjust sweetness to preference, as Moroccan mint tea is traditionally quite sweet.
