Carter Family Recipes

Creamy, lightly sweet, and delicately flavored with almond and vanilla, this easy fruit dip comes together in minutes. Poppy seeds add a subtle texture and visual contrast, while the pudding mix gives the dip body and sweetness.

Prep Time: 10 minutes
Total Time: 10 minutes
Servings: About 8
Difficulty: Very Easy — Level 1 of 5

Ingredients

  • 1 (8-ounce) package 1/3-less-fat cream cheese (Neufchâtel), softened
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1/2–3/4 of a 3.4-ounce package instant vanilla pudding mix
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1 teaspoon poppy seeds
  • Milk, as needed for thinning

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, beat the softened cream cheese and sour cream until smooth and creamy.
  2. Add 1/2 of the pudding mix, the granulated sugar, and almond extract. Beat until well combined.
  3. Taste the dip and add additional pudding mix, up to 3/4 of the package total, if a sweeter or slightly thicker consistency is desired.
  4. Fold in the poppy seeds.
  5. If the dip is thicker than desired, add milk a small amount at a time until it reaches the preferred consistency.
  6. Serve immediately, or cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.

Cook’s Notes

Pudding Mix: Start with 1/2 of the package, then add more only if needed. The additional pudding mix increases both sweetness and thickness.

Consistency: Add milk gradually. A small amount can noticeably loosen the dip.

Gluten-Free Note: Jell-O brand instant vanilla pudding is labeled gluten free, but always check the current package labeling if gluten avoidance is important.

Storage: Store the dip covered in the refrigerator.

Serving Suggestions

Fresh Fruit: Serve with strawberries, blueberries, bananas, kiwi, apple slices, grapes, or pineapple.

Crackers: Graham crackers pair especially well with the vanilla-almond flavor.

Dessert Board: Include this dip with assorted fruit, cookies, and crackers for an easy dessert platter.
