Choose a cleaner approved for the copper surface and its finish. Bare copper, lacquered copper, plated objects, and lined cookware need different care.

Use one compatible product

The former homemade paste combined flour, salt, Bar Keepers Friend, and vinegar. Do not make that mixture. Bar Keepers Friend directs users not to mix its products with other chemicals. Use the approved product alone, according to its current label and the object manufacturer’s instructions.

Protect the surface

Test an inconspicuous area only when appropriate. Avoid abrasive treatment of lacquer, thin plating, delicate decoration, or an intentional patina. Rinse and dry as directed; do not leave a cleaner on copper longer than specified. A cookware lining may require a different cleaner from the exterior.

Keep cleaners out of food storage

Do not refrigerate a cleaning paste alongside food. Keep chemical products in their original labeled containers, away from children and food. Valuable antiques should receive conservation advice before polishing.
