Carter Family Recipes

A refreshing, sophisticated mocktail that blends bright citrus with mineral sparkle and a subtle salty edge. It’s easy to make in a batch but tastes like you ordered it from a high-end bar.

Ingredients

  • 5 cups chilled limeade (e.g. Simply Limeade or Minute Maid)
  • 1/2 cup fresh-squeezed orange juice
  • 1/4 cup fresh lime juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon coarse sea salt (plus extra for optional rim)
  • 2 cups chilled Topo Chico or club soda
  • Ice
  • Lime wedges (for garnish and rimming, optional)
  • Optional flair: A splash (1 Tablespoon) of apple cider vinegar for extra depth
  • Optional garnish upgrade: Thin orange slice or sprig of fresh mint

Preparation

  1. If desired, rim serving glasses with lime juice and dip in coarse sea salt. Chill glasses for an extra refreshing experience.
  2. In a large pitcher, stir together the limeade, orange juice, lime juice, and 1/4 teaspoon sea salt until the salt dissolves.
  3. Optional: Add a splash of apple cider vinegar for a grown-up tang and slight complexity.
  4. Just before serving, gently stir in the sparkling water to maintain the bubbles.
  5. Fill glasses with ice and pour in the mocktail mixture.
  6. Garnish with lime wedges, orange slices, or a mint sprig for a polished finish.

Cook’s Notes

Using Frozen Orange Juice Concentrate

To substitute frozen orange juice concentrate for regular orange juice in this recipe, use the following method:

  1. Use 2 Tablespoons of frozen orange juice concentrate to equal 1/2 cup of orange juice once diluted.
  2. Stir the 2 Tablespoons of concentrate directly into the limeade mixture. It will dissolve as you mix.
  3. If the mocktail tastes too sweet or intense, add a small splash (1/2 to 1 teaspoon) of fresh lime juice or a bit of water to balance the flavor.

Tasting Notes

The limeade brings a consistent citrus base, while the fresh juices brighten and balance it. A whisper of sea salt echoes a classic Margarita’s signature rim, and the Topo Chico’s crisp bubbles elevate it to a refreshing, palate-cleansing drink. The optional vinegar addition adds a sophisticated tartness reminiscent of fine cocktails — but everything stays accessible, quick, and delicious.

This is perfect for summer gatherings, upscale mocktail hours, or just treating yourself to something citrusy and elegant — no shaker required.
