An elegant, adults-only twist on a childhood classic, this Velvet Night Chocolate Milk infuses rich dark chocolate with a velvety blend of Baileys Irish Cream and a whisper of bourbon or dark rum. The result is seductively smooth—deeply cocoa-forward, slightly boozy, and balanced with floral vanilla and a salty-sweet finish. Served warm in a demitasse or chilled over a single clear cube, it’s the drink equivalent of slipping into silk sheets at midnight.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups whole milk
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 2 oz 70–75% dark chocolate, finely chopped
- 1 Tablespoon Dutch-process cocoa powder
- 1 Tablespoon Demerara or turbinado sugar (adjust to taste)
- 1/2 teaspoon Tahitian or Madagascar vanilla extract
- 1/8 teaspoon fleur de sel or Maldon salt
- 1 oz Baileys Irish Cream
- 3/4 oz dark rum or bourbon
- Optional: Gold flake, chocolate shavings, or smoked salt rim for garnish
Preparation
- In a small saucepan, gently heat the milk and cream over medium-low heat until steaming but not boiling.
- Whisk in cocoa powder and sugar until completely dissolved.
- Add chopped chocolate, stirring constantly until silky and smooth.
- Remove from heat. Stir in vanilla, salt, Baileys, and dark rum or bourbon.
- Serve immediately:
- Hot: In a pre-warmed demitasse or espresso cup, topped with a dollop of lightly whipped cream or a single gold flake.
- Cold: Shake over ice in a cocktail shaker and strain into a rocks glass over a large cube.
- Optional: Garnish with dark chocolate curls or a fine salt-chocolate rim.
This version works beautifully as a luxe dessert drink, a fireside indulgence, or a surprise fourth course at a small dinner gathering.
