Ingredients
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 1/2 Tablespoons sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 packet dry yeast (about 1 1/8 teaspoons)
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1/4 cup warm water (100°F–110°F)
- 1/3 cup melted shortening
- 2 Tablespoons honey
Procedure
- Activate the Yeast: Dissolve the yeast in warm water and let sit for 5–10 minutes until frothy.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: Combine flour, baking soda, sugar, and salt in a large bowl.
- Combine Wet Ingredients: Stir together the buttermilk, melted shortening, honey, and the activated yeast. Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.
- Knead and Roll: On a floured surface, knead the dough lightly until smooth. Roll out to ¾-inch thickness and cut into rounds using a biscuit cutter.
- Proof: Arrange biscuits on a greased baking sheet, cover with a towel, and let rise in a warm spot for 30 minutes.
- Bake: Preheat oven to 425°F. Bake the biscuits for 12–15 minutes or until golden brown.
- Finish: Serve warm with a drizzle of honey or a pat of butter.
Cook’s Note
- These biscuits freeze beautifully. After cutting, freeze on a tray, then store in an airtight bag.
- Bake straight from frozen, adding 2–3 minutes to the bake time.
