Golden milk, or haldi doodh, is a traditional Indian drink made with milk, turmeric, and spices. It has a warm, earthy flavor and is often enjoyed in the evening for its calming qualities. The combination of turmeric and black pepper supports absorption of curcumin, while optional spices like cinnamon and ginger add both depth of flavor and additional health benefits.
Ingredients
- 1 cup milk (dairy or unsweetened plant-based)
- 1 to 2 teaspoons ground turmeric
- Pinch of ground black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
- 1/4 teaspoon grated fresh ginger or ground ginger (optional)
- Pinch of ground cardamom or 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
- 1 teaspoon honey, maple syrup, or date syrup, to taste (optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon ghee or coconut oil (optional)
Preparation
- In a small saucepan over low to medium heat, gently warm the milk without boiling.
- Whisk in the turmeric, black pepper, and any optional spices.
- Simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally to allow the flavors to infuse.
- Remove from heat and stir in the sweetener and ghee or coconut oil, if using.
- Strain through a fine mesh sieve for a smoother drink, if desired.
