Layers of buttery croissants filled with smoked ham, turkey, and Swiss cheese are soaked in a savory Dijon custard, then baked until golden and puffed. A light dusting of powdered sugar and drizzle of raspberry-maple sauce bring the signature sweet-and-savory finish that makes the Monte Cristo unforgettable.

Perfect for brunch gatherings or holiday mornings, it’s a dish that feels indulgent yet effortless—especially when prepared the night before.

Ingredients

  • 7 large eggs
  • 1 1/3 cups half-and-half
  • 4 teaspoons Dijon mustard
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 8 slices deli smoked ham (1/4-inch thick)
  • 8 slices deli smoked turkey (1/4-inch thick)
  • 8 slices Swiss cheese
  • 8 day-old croissants, halved horizontally
  • Cooking spray
  • 2 Tablespoons seedless raspberry jam
  • 1 Tablespoon pure maple syrup
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting

Preparation

  1. Whisk the egg custard: In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, half-and-half, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper until smooth. Set aside.
  2. Assemble the casserole: Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
  3. Place one slice each of ham, turkey, and Swiss cheese on the bottom half of each croissant, folding if needed to fit. Top with the upper croissant halves and arrange the filled croissants snugly in the prepared dish.
  4. Soak and chill: Pour the egg custard evenly over the croissants, pressing gently so they absorb the liquid.
  5. Cover tightly with aluminum foil and refrigerate for at least 8 hours, or up to 12 hours.
  6. Bake: Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  7. Bake covered for 15 minutes, then uncover and continue baking for 20 minutes, or until the croissants are golden brown and the custard is nearly set.
  8. Let cool for 10 minutes before serving.
  9. Make the drizzle and finish:
  10. In a small bowl, stir together the raspberry jam and maple syrup until smooth.
  11. Lightly dust the casserole with powdered sugar, drizzle with the raspberry-maple sauce, and serve warm.

Serving Suggestion

Serve with fresh berries or a light fruit salad for balance. This casserole pairs beautifully with coffee or mimosas for an elegant brunch spread.
